Heide, Söven Pölle Getelo

Getelo

Getelo

Getelo extends in the southwest of the joint municipality along the German-Dutch border. Mander and Vasse in the municipality of Tubbergen are neighboring Dutch villages. In Getelo you will find the "Söven Pölle". This is a prehistoric monument consisting of seven burial mounds.

The once impassable moorland areas in Getelo and Itterbeck were drained and cultivated at the end of the 1950s. Where peat was once cut, fertile meadows and farmland are now spreading.

The coat of arms of the municipality of Getelo

Coat of arms Getelo

The symmetrically designed coat of arms shows an upright oak tree with ten strong and striking leaves forming the crown in the upper 2/3 area. The top six leaves, three each mirrored to the left and right, symbolize the six letters of the place name Getelo. They each grow from three strong branches, which in turn stand for the three main settlement areas of the municipality: To the north the "Holthuise / Krakenhoek" area, to the south-east the old village and to the west the extensive lowland and relatively late-settled "Getelomoor", or, as it is known in dialect, "het Get ́ler Venn". The four leaves in the lower part of the tree canopy are also supposed to visibly stand for the four letters "Moor" or "Venn". ... - 2 - The oak is depicted with its roots pointing downwards and extending far out; below this root area, arranged in three levels, are the "Söben Pölle" already mentioned above, which fill the lower arch of the coat of arms as almost semi-circular design elements. The root area of the oak above illustrates the awareness that has grown over many generations that the roots of the local population are anchored in the past, which is attested to by the presence of the prehistoric "Söben Pölle". The coat of arms is limited to the colors green, black and red on a silver background. Summary: A sturdy oak tree with a black trunk bears a crown of ten green leaves. It stands with downward pointing roots over seven red hills in a 4 : 2 : 1 arrangement over a silver background.
