Wilsum

With over 47 square kilometers, Wilsum is the largest municipality within the joint municipality of Uelsen. Wilsum has a Protestant Reformed Church and a Protestant Old Reformed Church. The two churches have a strong influence on spiritual life.
The municipality of Wilsum is also very well developed in terms of tourism. There are several offers for farm vacations and the Wilsumer Berge recreation area attracts visitors from near and far, especially from the neighboring Netherlands, with over 1,000 camping pitches, a beautiful swimming lake and many other amenities.
A visit to the Schoneveld watermill, which has been developed and is maintained by the Wilsum local heritage association, is definitely worthwhile.

Coat of arms of the municipality of Halle

Wilsum coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Wilsum is divided from red over green by a silver bar wavy at the top. At the top is a silver ring with a spoke running through it in poles, accompanied by two silver balls in poles; at the bottom is a silver beehive. The Münster heraldist Dr. Korn developed the design for the coat of arms. Fritz Raafkes, who contributed creatively, was instrumental in the process, but could not speed it up. In my opinion, a heraldist is characterized by the fact that the development and creation of the design has to take a long time. In order to understand the symbols on the coat of arms, a brief history of Wilsum is necessary. The town of Wilshem was first mentioned in 851. In the coat of arms we find 4 silver balls and a silver wheel with a vertical spoke in the red part at the top. The number 4 comes from the four Rotts in earlier times. The wheel is taken from the coat of arms of the Lords of Schoneveld, a castle family of the 13th and 14th centuries. The color red comes from the county coat of arms. In the lower green part, a beehive is depicted, reminiscent of the barren landscape with heathland, beekeeping and beekeeping. The color green stands for landscape and agriculture. Both main parts of the coat of arms form a wavy silver bar in the middle. It stands for the ice-age sand deposits of the Wilsum hill chain and the many streams and watercourses. In future, the coat of arms will be displayed at the entrances to Wilsum and on the municipal seal.
