A task with a constitutional dimension
Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany
Article 3 para. 2
"Men and women have equal rights and the state promotes the actual implementation of equal rights for women and men and works towards the elimination of existing disadvantages."
Constitution of Lower Saxony
Article 3 para. 2 sentence 3
"Respect for fundamental rights, in particular the realization of equal rights for women and men, is a permanent task of the state, municipalities and districts."
The tasks
The Equal Opportunities Officer advises and supports the administration and the council ("the representation") in recognizing the need for gender equality policy action within the municipality and reducing gender-based discrimination.
Her work also focuses on the implementation of gender equality for women and men within her own administration (personnel and organizational issues). The Equal Opportunities Officer therefore works closely with the administrative management, issues statements or proposes measures herself.
It is obliged to participate. It is obliged to participate in all projects, decisions, programs and measures that have an impact on gender equality.
It is networked with individuals, organizations and associations both locally and nationally.
The Equal Opportunities Officer has an open ear for residents whose concerns she takes up for her work when it comes to the topic of "gender discrimination".
It uses public relations work to raise awareness of its issues and provide information.
